UPCOMING PARENT EVENTS
One of the things you’ll learn on this creek walk is that Tanque Verde Creek – like many of our other creeks – is inhabited by some invasive species. WMG has received funding to remove one of these species, Arundo Donax (also known as giant reed), from the Tanque Verde. Arundo is harmful because it drinks up to 3-4 times as much water as native desert plants, crowds out native species and habitat, and increases the risk of flooding and wildfire. By removing Arundo, the River Run Network is helping to restore groundwater levels and surface flow in the Tanque Verde.
Join us to experience the creek firsthand, see the work other River Run Network Members have already done to remove Arundo, and learn how you can help too!
This event is organized through WMG’s River Run Network. If you are not yet a member, we will add you to the Network when you register for this event. RRN membership is free and gives you access to a variety of virtual, dispersed, and physically-distanced events including creek walks, restoration activities, river cleanups, and educational workshops.
LAST WEEK’S
MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Students studied the creation of the universe as it relates to our four cycle themes this year (forces, structure, power, and balance). They also wrote their own creation stories and shared them with Elementary I students. Friday, they went on a walk with Mary Beth’s class.
Middle School students returned from
their
class camping trip this week to Mt. Lemmon.
Stay tuned for pictures next week!
ELEMENTARY II COMMUNITY
“Mapping is fundamental to the process of lending order to the world.”
~ Robert Rundstrum, 1926
Elementary II students continued learning about the solar system using the Montessori Geography Charts. This week, the students learned about the importance of the Earth’s rotation, its 23 1/2 degrees from the vertical axis, and our revolution around the sun. Without these factors our life would be much different.
ELEMENTARY I COMMUNITY
Cosmic Address
Following the First Great Lesson, students enjoyed an activity to help understand our place in the universe. From the most local (city and state), to the most vast (universe), students find their place in the universe.
After School Elementary I Basketball Program
Our third year of Gila Monsters basketball is upon us! Elementary I students are invited to participate in a weekly, introductory program to the sport of basketball. Each Tuesday, from 3:00 – 4:15 P.M., students will focus on different aspects of the sport in a competitive and kind environment. No prior experience is needed, only a positive attitude! Space is limited, so please email Goose (
goosek@hermosaschool.org
) if your child would like to join our team (on a first-come, first-serve basis).
