Happy Birthday to
Dr. Maria Montessori!
|
Dear Maria Montessori,
Millions of people are walking the earth leading better lives of peace and fulfillment because you came along in 1870 and then later dared to pursue your dream to pierce the armor of a men only club that deprived women of the right to become medical doctors. Lesser humans might have stopped there, but you possessed the power of imagination. As we know, the power to imagine makes us infinite and you imagined a world at peace because you listened to what the child was telling you.

One of the things you’ll learn on this creek walk is that Tanque Verde Creek – like many of our other creeks – is inhabited by some invasive species. WMG has received funding to remove one of these species, Arundo Donax (also known as giant reed), from the Tanque Verde. Arundo is harmful because it drinks up to 3-4 times as much water as native desert plants, crowds out native species and habitat, and increases the risk of flooding and wildfire. By removing Arundo, the River Run Network is helping to restore groundwater levels and surface flow in the Tanque Verde.
Join us to experience the creek firsthand, see the work other River Run Network Members have already done to remove Arundo, and learn how you can help too!
This event is organized through WMG’s River Run Network. If you are not yet a member, we will add you to the Network when you register for this event. RRN membership is free and gives you access to a variety of virtual, dispersed, and physically-distanced events including creek walks, restoration activities, river cleanups, and educational workshops.

Middle school students began their integrated academic unit of study entitled Forces. During this cycle, teachers present students with information in multiple content areas that center around this theme.
|
|
In
Social Studies
, students considered and studied the
forces that brought about the American Revolution.
In the
Personal World
component of the curriculum, students began to learn about the forces in their personal lives, including the inner and outside forces that impact their decisions. They began to learn about peer pressure, forms of stress, and how one can manage the forces that impact their lives.
During the Mt. Lemmon camping trip, students participated in community building activities, cooking, and hiking last week.
We take this trip to help students solidify their bond at the end of our orientation cycle. They returned to campus as a closer knit community and with a new understanding of each other.

In
Science,
students are learning about the Life Cycle of Stars, how the sun’s rays reach the earth, and the effects of perpendicular and oblique rays.
In
History,
fourth year students are focusing on a study of the North American Native Tribes, fifth year students are learning about the United States Constitution, and sixth year students are learning about Neolithic People & Migratory Patterns.

Language Arts & Mathematics
|
|
Students make use of the many manipulative materials that help them understand abstract concepts in Language Arts and Mathematics. In the photos below, you can see students using the “golden beads” and “stamp game” which illustrate math functions, and prepare students to integrate these concepts before moving fully to abstraction and memorization of math facts. You can also see some of the materials to assist with beginning spelling and reading.

Some Primary, Elementary I and Elementary II students harvested prickly pear fruits. This is just another way we are enjoying our desert environment!

Animal and Environmental Study
|
|
Primary students are enjoying their study of the Sonoran Desert and all the critters that live here – including bats! We adopted a bat from Kartchner Caverns State Park and named it Hot Dog. Each month, Kartchner Caverns will send us information on our bat so we can learn about the canyon bats of Arizona. This month we also learned about the smallest bat (the bumblebee bat) and the largest bat (the golden-crowned flying fox). Then, we found a bat living in the ceiling of a porch at our school and saw what a bat looked like in real life.
